The History of

A Patch of Hope

A Patch of Hope began with a horse named Patch — one of our very first rescues, and the heart behind our mission.

We welcomed Patch into our lives when he was just 4 years old. He was unhandled, wary of humans, and full of untamed spirit. But in his eyes, we saw potential. It was a young child’s love, patience, and quiet persistence that helped Patch blossom into a gentle, wise teacher — the kind of horse who could change lives. He taught us that healing takes time, connection, and trust.

At 13 years old, Patch faced his first major health crisis — a severe intestinal obstruction that required emergency surgery. He bravely pulled through. But a decade later, at 24 years old, Patch suffered a second obstruction. This time, his body couldn’t recover. We had to say goodbye to our beloved friend.

In our grief, we found purpose.

We created A Patch of Hope in his memory — a place where horses like Patch can be given a second chance to feel safe, loved, and free. And just like Patch, they go on to teach children and adults the values of empathy, resilience, and hope.

Every horse that walks through our gates carries a part of Patch’s legacy. And every person who finds healing here — whether through brushing a pony, sharing a quiet moment, or learning to ride — continues the story he helped begin.

He was one horse. But his impact grew into something bigger than we ever imagined.

A patch of love. A patch of healing. A Patch of Hope.

Our Mission.

At A Patch of Hope a non-profit organization, our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abused, neglected, and abandoned equines, providing them with a second chance at life.

We are committed to offering individuals of all ages—youth and adults alike—opportunities to connect with, learn from, and care for these magnificent animals. Through hands-on experiences, educational programs, and therapeutic interactions, we empower people to build confidence, compassion, and emotional resilience.

Our educational initiatives focus on teaching the humane treatment of animals, the fundamentals of equine care, and the therapeutic benefits of human-animal connections. In doing so, we not only transform the lives of the horses we rescue but also inspire personal growth, healing, and a deeper sense of responsibility toward animals and one another, fostering stronger, more compassionate communities.
